What Time Of Day Should You Stop Drinking Coffee

Are you reaching for a third or fourth cup of coffee by 2pm? For those of you who drink multiple cups a day, it’s a good idea to control your caffeine intake. We recently shared an article on how to reduce coffee consumption from 5 cups a day to 1 using CBD for energy, and it’s absolutely a great idea. In fact, you may even want to make a new year’s resolution. But if you’re not quite there yet, you can start by stopping your caffeine intake at a time that won’t disrupt your sleep.

Let’s take a closer look at coffee consumption beyond one cup a day.

What Happens When You Drink Too Much Coffee?

Over-consumption of coffee can lead to several different side effects. According to the Mayo Clinic, for those of you who drink more than 4 cups of coffee a day, you can experience the following:

  • Headaches
  • Insomnia
  • Irritability
  • Frequent urination or inability to control urination
  • Fast heartbeat
  • Muscle tremors

If you’ve been drinking 4+ cups of coffee a day for a while, you may not even realize these symptoms are present. The Mayo Clinic recommends that 400 milligrams of caffeine is a safe amount for most healthy adults (this includes foods that contain caffeine such as chocolate and matcha treats).

Why Are You Consuming So Much Coffee?

Millions of people rely on coffee to get them through the day. It helps them stay alert and improves concentration and focus. But if you’re relying on a cup of Joe beyond your morning cup, it could be a sign that you’re not getting enough sleep. And, to make the situation slightly more complicated, your excessive coffee intake could be the reason why you’re not getting enough sleep.

When Should I Stop Drinking Coffee

If you Google this, you will find recommendations like stop drinking after 3pm, or 2pm, or 1pm. The best answer is to stop drinking coffee 6 hours prior to your bedtime. It also depends on many other factors such as your age, metabolism, genetics, how often you drink coffee, and more.  But typically, 6 hours is a good time to quit caffeine for the day. The more you honour your caffeine cut-off time, the better sleep you will have.

Additionally, creating a solid bedtime routine will also help you feel more refreshed in the mornings and you can get by with enjoying that one cup of CBD coffee to get you through the day, without having to brew more. Here are some tips for a great bedtime routine:

  • Honour your caffeine cutoff time
  • Stop screen time 1 hour before bed
  • Read for an hour to 30 minutes before falling asleep
  • Go to bed at the same time each night and ensure you have 7 hours of sleep
  • Stop drinking liquids 1 hour before you go to sleep
